Dad enjoyed life too...
with a wonderful sense of humor and infectious laugh.
He played sports and enjoyed music.
But he tended toward the more "left-brain" pursuits....
He excelled on the Debate Team.

This excerpt is from a typical test
in subjects he studied ...

Dad and Mother on their wedding day...

He gave her the lovely cameo she's wearing...

Some of Mother's people...

Mother's beloved Dad, William ("Billy") on the left,
and my Greatgrandfather and Greatgrandmother Smith.

In those days, it was not unusual for a first wife
to bear many children and die fairly young.
Billy's first wife did so,
Later Billy married my Grandmother, Harriet Smith.
Mother was the eldest of their three daughters.

I was named in honor of Aunt Nellie,
the youngest of the children in Billy's first family,
and for my Mother's youngest sister, Annie Laurie.

Mother's parents...

Billy looking somewhat less hirsute!
Grandmother's picture was a victim of the house fire smoke...

As a matter of interest...

...this is a property deed awarded one of Mother's forebears
for service in a war in the early 1800's -
signed by American President Franklin Pierce.

There are also a number of personal letters written
between family members during the American Civil War -
the kinsmen fighting on both sides of the line!

Dad's Mother, Louisa Seidner, in 1882...

...taken several years before she married my grandfather.
Theirs was also his second marriage,
following the death of his first wife,
who bore him many children.
Dad was also the eldest of a second family,
four sons, born to Louisa and Christian Holdeman.

Dad's immediate family...

...and years later...

Dad's brother, my grandmother and dad, during a visit to Indiana.

Dad's family were avid chroniclers...

Detailed records of the family were kept,
and my name is mentioned in each volume!
