The old fence in this picture is an example of an early technique. These rustic "picket fences" were sometimes constructed of native wood, but the scarsity of trees prompted the use of tall, strong sotol stalks in the construction, as well as any other type of stalk native to this area. This one is all that remains of the type on my ranch, and I've battled to keep it in place, tacky as it may look! Nowadays, though, modern versions are back in vogue and are sometimes to be seen around.
These stalks also can be carved into excellent walking sticks ~ very valuable in an area such as this.
